Around the middle of October....
Tom Dowd
died. Some of you may know who he is right off the bat, just the sound
of his name will do it for you. Some of you may have to dig deep down and
recall. Recall reading album liner notes. Ahhh...Tom Dowd...that's right, if you
ever listened to Eric Clapton (Layla), Allman Brothers, and other
legendary rhythm and blues artists you know or have heard Tom Dowd's
product. Tom Dowd was a record producer. He produced some of the (my
opinion only) best music in the 1970s, and 80s. Some of the best ever I
think.
What you may not know is that Tom Dowd's first profession
was that of a nuclear physics engineer. He worked on the Manhattan
project. That's correct, he helped develop the nuclear bomb. When
Mr. Dowd wrapped up his work on the Manhattan project he found that
his experience, since the project was top secret, was virtually
non-existent. Meaning, he couldn't use it to get a job in the world
of nuclear physics. With no other way to make a living he turned to the physics
of sound. A very interesting guy. You can hear a little story about this
